I have a female cat that is about 2 yrs old. She is normally a hyper cat. My friend brought over her 10 months old male cat and the female cat reacted in a way that I have never seen before. She became very defensive and hissing as she was going to attack. Is she acting that way because she has never been around cats before? Was she actually going to attack?

I have five 3 week old kittens. Sometimes when someone approaches them they meow and run out of their nest towards us. Then they continue meowing. Sometimes they wander off, running in various directions. Sometimes they climb on our laps. I mean its not really consistent what they do afterward. Their mother gets upset and meows at us to put them back. Why are they behaving this way? What do they want?
