How do cats react towards one another?
shaebear4784 asked:
I have a female cat that is about 2 yrs old. She is normally a hyper cat. My friend brought over her 10 months old male cat and the female cat reacted in a way that I have never seen before. She became very defensive and hissing as she was going to attack. Is she acting that way because she has never been around cats before? Was she actually going to attack?

Cats generally react very badly to other animals if they are meeting them for the first time. My cats are fine with each other and our dogs now, but when we first brought home the dogs, they flipped. They also flipped when we brought home a new kitten. They will attack if the other animal keeps coming at them, even in a friendly way.

Cats ordinarily don’t like other cats intruding on their territory. They will hiss, and possibly even fight, to scare the other cat off. They can get used to each other given time and a little space, but until they do there will be a lot of tension between them.
We have four cats and they all are used to each other and hardly even react to each other anymore. But if a strange cat comes around, then they will get defensive, hiss, and occassionally fight.

My cats act the same way. It’s just that cats are all about smell not sight. When there’s a smell they don’t recognize, they consider it a threat. She probably would not have attacked unless the other cat did something drastic that scared her first.

cats are very cautious toward other cats
after a couple of days, a cat will get used to another cat in the house, but it sometimes takes weeks to months for your cat to get used to another pet in the house unless they were raised together. but yes, if a cat hisses, it is likely for it to attack, although they sometimes just hiss and walk away.

when girl and boy cats are together they act weird. even when they have sex its like they hate each other. if you each hold your cats but sit them next to each other on the sofa, they will probably lick each other, but hold them cos eventually it will turn to clawing and biting.

I am going through the same thing right now. I have a 7 yr old female cat who I adopted 2 years ago. And 5 days ago I adopted an 8 yr old male cat. The female has been hissing and growling at the male cat for 5 days. The shelter gave me a tip however. If you rub them both down with dryer sheets before introducing them(or with something that has YOUR scent on it) They will take to each other faster cause they will both smell the same. But I think with time, they will get used to each other. I am still waiting for mine however!

my male cat used to pee/hit male guest when they fall asleep (before he was sterilised). after that it got better. and when my bf came back from overseas, my male cat pee ed on him everyday for a week. I’m guessing he reacted to the male scent or testosterone levels.
i have a female cat too(sister of the male cat), she has to do as the male cat tells her. my male cat is the boss in the house.
in your case, maybe your female cat is used to being the boss(dominant one) while bringing in a male cat(that wants to be dominant), she is not happy about that. so she wants to scare him/ telling him to back off.

your cat was protecting her territory if your cat was to be around another cat for an extended period of time it would most likly react differently when i first got my 2nd cat my first one hissed at it and was even hissing and tryign to bite me but my older cat came around and is not like a toddler and is attached at my hip
